Earlier Report Observations
The market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in Tanzania showed relative stability from 2018 to 2020, with volumes moving between 658 and 679 thousand tons. A substantial expansion followed, with market size climbing to 857 thousand tons in 2021 and reaching 882 thousand tons in 2022, as domestic production rose significantly.
This growth reversed sharply in 2023 when the market contracted to 520 thousand tons. This shift aligned with proactive government policies under President Samia Suluhu Hassan aimed at boosting agricultural exports, which supported a rise in groundnut shipments abroad to 69 thousand tons and reduced domestic availability. Concurrently, increased state investment in agro-processing factories and industrial clusters for oil seeds sought to add value to crops, influencing supply chains and market structure.
For 2024, the agriculture budget was increased to Sh1.24 trillion, focusing on transformation under the Tanzania Agriculture Master Plan 2050. This included plans to construct processing facilities for oil seeds, which may affect future production capacity and market access for groundnuts.
