The Dutch market for non-reinforced, non-laminated non-cellular polyethylene sheets, film, and strip grew steadily in physical volume between 2018 and 2024, expanding from 198 thousand tons to 269 thousand tons. This growth accelerated notably in 2021, when market volume surged by 12% year-on-year, contributing to an overall increase of 35% over the period.

In value terms, the market displayed more volatility. After a decline to $491 million in 2019, market value rebounded sharply, peaking at $752 million in 2022. By 2024, however, the value had contracted to $653 million, indicating a significant shift in average prices or product mix despite the continued rise in consumption volume.

Domestic production remained relatively stable around 165 thousand tons annually until 2022 but then fell to 148 thousand tons in 2024. The growing market volume was increasingly supplied by imports, which rose from 178 thousand tons in 2018 to 264 thousand tons in 2024, highlighting a greater dependence on foreign supply to meet demand.

After two consecutive years of decline, the Netherlands saw a recovery in the production value of not reinforced or laminated non-cellular PE sheets. In 2021, output reached 593.4 million US dollars, marking a significant 33.5% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 14%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 4.5%. The lowest production value was recorded in 2020 at 444.6 million US dollars, following the largest decline of 10.6% in 2019.

In 2021, the country produced 167.8 thousand tonnes, showing a modest rise of 2.7% from the previous year. The lowest production volume was in 2019 at 162.9 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 0.9%.

The lowest export volume was in 2020 at 142.4 thousand tonnes, which also experienced the largest decline of 7.7%.

Between 2018 and 2021, the top destinations for the Netherlands' exports of not reinforced or laminated non-cellular PE sheets in volume terms were Germany, accounting for 29.0% of exports, Belgium with 24.9%, and France at 10.2%. Following a two-year downturn, the value of not reinforced or laminated non-cellular PE sheets exported from the Netherlands rebounded. In 2021, exports totaled 616.9 million US dollars, a sharp 39.2% increase from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, export value rose by 22%, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate of 6.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 443.3 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 10.5%.
