Earlier Report Observations

The non-vegetable waxes market in Oceania experienced significant volume shifts between 2018 and 2020, driven largely by international trade flows and beekeeping conditions. A surge in global demand for beeswax in 2018 elevated prices and highlighted Australia's role as a major producer. The following year, increased access to cheaper imports, particularly from China, made the country a net importer and swelled the market volume to a peak of 838 tons. This expansion was tempered in 2020 as difficult conditions for apiarists, including widespread pesticide use in agriculture, constrained domestic production and contributed to a market contraction.

Market volume proved volatile in the subsequent period, declining to 742 tons in 2021 before recovering to 824 tons in 2022. These movements corresponded with fluctuations in import and export levels while domestic production remained relatively stable.

A pivotal change occurred in 2023 when updated European Union export certification requirements, specifically a new electronic certificate for edible beeswax in cosmetics, facilitated overseas shipments. This triggered a sharp rise in exports to 423 tons, which combined with steady import levels, reduced the domestic market volume to 606 tons. Concurrently, consumer preference shifted toward natural and sustainable beeswax products in cosmetics and hair styling. In 2024, further streamlining of EU export procedures and reported challenges in bee wintering continued to shape the supply landscape.
