Earlier Report Observations
The market for non-coniferous wood fuel in Syria expanded from 6 344 m³ in 2018 to 6 803 m³ in 2021. This growth was primarily driven by ongoing challenges in the oil and gas sector, where war and sanctions caused fluctuations and declines in production, increasing reliance on wood fuel as an alternative energy source. In 2020 and 2021, memoranda of understanding and strategic agreements were signed with international companies to develop gas and oil fields, but these efforts did not immediately alleviate energy shortages, sustaining demand for wood fuel.
In 2022, the market volume jumped to 7 405 m³, largely due to a surge in imports which reached 482 m³. This increase coincided with the Syria International Oil and Gas Exhibition Serpetro 2022, which aimed to attract investments into the energy sector and may have indirectly supported broader energy-related trade, including wood fuel imports.
The market contracted to 7 076 m³ in 2023 as imports fell to zero. This decline followed a government decision to reduce prices of petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, and domestic gas cylinders, making them more affordable and reducing the incentive for consumers to switch to wood fuel.
