From 2018 to 2020, production of non-coniferous wood fuel in South-eastern Asia gradually declined from 146.3 million m³ to 141.9 million m³. The available market volume, however, reached 91.6 million m³ in 2020 and grew to 96.3 million m³ in 2021. This increase coincided with a global economic recovery that spurred wood demand, leading to supply shortages and a sharp rise in prices, which affected the regional market dynamics.

A significant expansion occurred in 2022, with the market volume jumping to 127.0 million m³, a 32% increase from the previous year. This surge was primarily driven by weak global demand for wood due to sluggish construction activity worldwide, which caused a steep drop in exports from the region. Concurrently, climate change effects, such as more frequent wildfires, began disrupting raw wood supply, further influencing market conditions.

By 2023, market growth stabilized at 127.7 million m³. Continued weak global consumption and supply chain disruptions from extreme weather events maintained pressure on the market. Additionally, shifts in the regional energy sector towards solar deployment and natural gas usage indirectly impacted the biomass and wood fuel landscape.

Non-coniferous wood fuel production in South-eastern Asia has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 141.9 million cubic meters, which is 1.4% less than in 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 4.5%, with an average annual decline of 1.5%.
