Earlier Report Observations

The Czech non-coniferous wood fuel market experienced notable shifts between 2018 and 2023. An extensive bark beetle infestation increased the supply of wood, affecting prices and availability in the initial years. However, market volume contracted in 2019. The situation reversed in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic spurred higher demand for home heating with wood, lifting the market to 663 thousand m³.

Market growth continued through 2021 and 2022, driven primarily by rising energy prices and consumer shift towards wood fuel. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 further disrupted fossil fuel supplies, significantly boosting demand for wood. Concurrently, the introduction of the EU Ecodesign standards from January 2022, which required new stoves and boilers to meet stricter emission limits, supported demand for higher-quality non-coniferous wood. These factors pushed the market volume to a peak of 786 thousand m³ in 2022, aided by an expansion of new suppliers entering the distribution network that year.

In 2023, the market corrected sharply, with volume falling to 589 thousand m³. This decline followed the post-pandemic demand surge, as consumption normalized and some of the new market players that had emerged in 2022 scaled back their operations.
