Production of non-coniferous wood fuel in Central Asia fluctuated between 2 000 and 2 200 thousand m³ from 2018 to 2023, peaking at 2 160 thousand m³ in 2020. The market's development phase saw the emergence of new product segments, such as charcoal from deciduous wood, while increased capacity of gas-fired power plants in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan introduced competition, contributing to stabilized output in the early years.

Changes in Russian forestry policy significantly impacted Central Asian production. Adjustments to timber export rules in 2021, followed by a 2022 ban on exports of unprocessed wood to unfriendly countries, restricted raw material availability, leading to a decline to 2 029 thousand m³ in 2022. In response, the reorientation of Russian exports toward Asian markets, including Central Asia, with increased supplies of sawnwood and roundwood, supported a recovery to 2 046 thousand m³ in 2023.

By 2024, the continued decline in Russian exports of unprocessed timber stimulated domestic processing and wood fuel production for the regional market. Concurrently, growing deliveries of Russian petroleum products to Central Asia created additional competition, while the environmental shift toward renewable energy sources could bolster demand for wood fuel as a greener alternative.

In Central Asia, 2 160 thousand cubic meters of non-coniferous wood fuel were produced in 2020. This represents a 3.6% increase compared to the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 5.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, when production decreased by 0.1%.
