The Slovenian market for non-coniferous roundwood experienced a notable expansion in volume from 2018 to 2023, with total market size rising from 1.3 million m³ to 1.6 million m³. After a period of relative stability between 2019 and 2021, domestic consumption surged by nearly 18% in 2023, reaching its highest level in the observed period.

This growth was underpinned by a steady increase in domestic production, which climbed from 1.6 million m³ to 2.1 million m³ over the same timeframe. High export volumes, particularly in 2022, periodically diverted supply away from the domestic market, while fluctuating import levels, including a sharp drop in 2023, contributed to varying availability for local consumption.

In value terms, the market demonstrated even stronger growth, increasing from $166 million to $273 million. This rise in total market value significantly outpaced the volume growth, reflecting higher unit prices for non-coniferous roundwood, especially from 2021 onward.

In Slovenia, non-coniferous roundwood production reached 1 785 thousand cubic meters in 2020, marking a 2.8% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 11.3%, which translates to an average annual increase of 3.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1 596 thousand cubic meters, while the peak occurred in 2019 with 1 836 thousand cubic meters. The most significant year-over-year growth was observed in 2019, when production surged by 15.1%.

Following two consecutive years of growth, non-coniferous roundwood production in Slovenia experienced a decline. In 2020, the output was valued at 190.3 million US dollars, reflecting a 4.2% drop compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production value increased by 26.9%, averaging an 8.3% annual growth rate. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 198.6 million US dollars, and the largest year-over-year increase occurred in 2018, with a rise of 27.2%.

In 2020, Slovenia's exports of non-coniferous roundwood amounted to 548.6 thousand cubic meters, showing a 2.8% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports declined by 11.4%, with an average annual decrease of 4.0%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 385.5 thousand cubic meters. The most substantial decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 37.8%, while the largest increase was observed in 2019, with a growth of 46.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy, China, and Austria were the leading destinations for Slovenia's non-coniferous roundwood exports in volume terms. Italy accounted for 63.7% of exports, China for 10.5%, and Austria for 9.7%. Together, these three countries represented 83.9% of total export flows.

After two years of decline, non-coniferous roundwood imports into Slovenia rebounded. In 2020, imports were valued at 25 102 thousand US dollars, which is 21.0% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, import value increased by 11.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 20 741 thousand US dollars, and the largest decline occurred in 2018, with a decrease of 6.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Croatia, Hungary, and Italy remained the primary sources for Slovenia's non-coniferous roundwood imports in value terms. Together, these three countries accounted for 59.3% of total import value.
