Earlier Report Observations

The Swedish nitrites and nitrates market saw its volume grow from 8 800 tons in 2018 to a peak of 9 858 tons in 2020, before declining to 8 828 tons in 2021 and further to 7 971 tons in 2023. In value terms, the market increased from 3.5 million US dollars in 2018 to 5.0 million in 2020, then dropped to 4.3 million in 2021, with a partial recovery to 4.6 million in 2023.

In 2024, new EU-wide regulatory changes directly affected the market. Stricter maximum limits for nitrites and nitrates as food additives (E 249–E 252) came into force from October 2023, with a transition period until April 2024, aiming to reduce heavy metal content in foods like meat and cheese. Simultaneously, the European Commission launched a public consultation on evaluating the Nitrates Directive, which regulates agricultural nitrate pollution and could influence fertilizer use and environmental compliance in Sweden.
