Finland's nickel mattes market demonstrated significant activity in the late 2010s, with imports valued at $918 million in 2018. The market's total value then grew from $853 million in 2019 to $1 093 million in 2020, establishing a period of expansion.

Market growth continued, reaching $1 244 million in 2021 before stabilizing at $1 225 million in 2022. This stabilization aligned with a shift to a global nickel supply surplus, primarily driven by Indonesia's more than 100% surge in nickel matte production and supply chain disruptions stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war, which tightened global trade flows and affected pricing.

In the following years, Finland's import values contracted sharply, falling from $1 834 million in 2022 to $667 million by 2024. This decline corresponded with global market conditions where expanded production and exports from Indonesia and China increased available supply, followed by a noted decrease in worldwide nickel matte production and export prices in 2024.
