Earlier Report Observations

The German newsprint market contracted from USD 1 223 million in 2018 to USD 784 million in 2020. Early in the period, industry reports highlighted a marked decrease in demand volume for newsprint in rolls, signaling pressure from digital alternatives.

Market size edged up to USD 806 million in 2021 before surging to USD 1 319 million in 2022. This sharp value increase was driven primarily by manufacturer-announced price hikes, a response to soaring energy costs intensified by the war in Ukraine and a shift to short-term energy contracts to curb expenses.

By 2024, the market had fallen to USD 647 million. The ongoing decline in newsprint demand due to digitalization led to further mill closures and machine shutdowns, while wholesale prices for paper and office supplies also recorded a slight decrease.
