Earlier Report Observations

The newsprint market in Costa Rica contracted from 40 205 t in 2018 to 35 213 t in 2023, a 12% decline driven primarily by a steep fall in imports, which dropped from 7 749 t to 2 602 t over the period. Domestic production remained steady at 32 731 t each year. The most pronounced reductions in market volume occurred in 2019 and 2020, while from 2021 onward the market showed signs of stabilization with minor annual fluctuations.

From 2022, the market was influenced by a broader shift toward digitalization in commercial transactions, including the implementation of centralized registries for electronic bills of exchange and the advancement of e-invoicing. These changes reduced reliance on paper for formal documentation, likely dampening demand for newsprint. Concurrently, the growing market for corrugated packaging in Costa Rica indicated a shift in paper consumption toward packaging materials, reflecting changing industry dynamics.
