Earlier Report Observations

The Romanian new pneumatic tire market began the period with volume growth, reaching 16.1 million units in 2019 from 15.6 million in 2018. This increase was driven by the elimination of an environmental tax that boosted sales, coupled with expanding consumer preference for all-season tires and larger 17-inch rims. After a drop to 14.6 million units in 2020, the market recovered to 16.5 million units in 2021.

From 2022 onward, significant capacity expansions reshaped the production landscape. A new entrant from Russia began constructing a €100 million tire factory in Oradea, while established global players relocated production from Poland to Romania. In 2023, the EUDR regulation on deforestation-free rubber introduced new compliance requirements for tire manufacturers, coinciding with Romania rising as a major exporter.

By 2024, mandatory winter tire legislation requiring use on snow- or ice-covered roads influenced seasonal demand patterns. Innovations in tire materials, including graphene and biodegradable compounds, promised enhanced durability. However, the domestic market volume fell to 12.6 million units, with value decreasing to $727 million after peaking at $916 million in 2023.
