Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the natural latex market in Papua New Guinea experienced a gradual contraction, with total volume declining from 5.7 thousand tons to 5.5 thousand tons. This overall decrease was punctuated by yearly fluctuations driven primarily by shifts in import and export activity rather than major changes in domestic output.

Domestic production remained largely steady after a one-time reduction in 2020, settling at 5.5 thousand tons annually from 2020 onward. Meanwhile, import volumes saw a temporary surge in 2020–2021, exceeding 60 tons, before falling back to minimal levels. Exports were sporadic, with a notable shipment of 148 tons in 2022 significantly drawing down available supply that year.

By 2023, the market had partly recovered from the low point of 2022, reaching 5.5 thousand tons, though it did not return to the higher level seen at the start of the period. The stability in local production provided a consistent base, while external trade introduced volatility into total market size.
