Earlier Report Observations

The Swedish market for fresh or chilled mushrooms and truffles experienced a general decline from 2018 to 2023, with total volume falling by approximately 15% over the period. After starting at 14 567 tonnes in 2018, market size dipped slightly in 2019 before showing a minor recovery in 2020. However, from 2021 onwards, a clear downward trend emerged, culminating in a market volume of just 12 331 tonnes in 2023.

Domestic production showed volatility during these years. It expanded significantly from 1 200 tonnes in 2018 to 1 760 tonnes in 2020, but then dropped sharply to 1 230 tonnes in 2021 before partially recovering to 1 410 tonnes by 2023. In contrast, imports, which constitute the bulk of supply, steadily contracted from over 13 500 tonnes in 2018 to around 11 100 tonnes in 2023, with the most pronounced drop occurring in the final year.

The consistent reduction in import volumes was the primary driver behind the overall market contraction, as the growth in domestic output during some years was insufficient to offset the declining inflow from abroad. The market's downward trajectory accelerated in 2023, when imports fell by 11% year-on-year, leading to the lowest recorded market size in the period.
