Earlier Report Observations
The enforcement of the Minamata Convention on Mercury in China, effective from August 2017, imposed strict limits on the production of mercury-containing products such as thermometers and sphygmomanometers, leading to a sustained decline in domestic mercury output from 2 317 t in 2018 to 1 000 t in 2022.
Ahead of the full ban on mercury thermometer production scheduled for January 2026, environmental policies accelerated the substitution of mercury-based medical devices with electronic alternatives by 2024, further reducing industrial demand. Consumer stockpiling of mercury thermometers ahead of the ban temporarily influenced market behavior, but the overall trend remained one of contraction as non-toxic materials replaced mercury across applications.
