This growth was initially fueled by the explosive rise of online sales for beds and mattresses, with major players like Dekbed-Discounter.nl significantly scaling up their operations and warehouse space, making products more accessible. Concurrently, a shift in consumer preferences towards cold foam mattresses altered market dynamics and stimulated demand. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further accelerated interest in home furnishings, leading to a sharp increase in market size.

From 2022 onward, the market contracted, falling to USD 98.7 million in 2022 and further to USD 82.5 million in 2023. The decline was primarily triggered by the introduction of a mandatory disposal fee for new mattresses from January 2022, which raised end-consumer costs.
