After two consecutive years of growth, mate production in South America experienced a decline. In 2020, the region produced 1 474 K t of mate, representing a slight decrease of 0.8% compared to the previous year. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production overall increased by 4.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.4%. The peak production was recorded in 2019 at 1 485 K t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 3.5%.

Exports of mate from South America continued to grow for the second year in a row. In 2020, export volumes reached 49 104 t, reflecting a substantial year-over-year increase of 15.1%. From 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 3.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.1%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 41 110 t, which also experienced the largest decline of 13.5%.
