Between 2018 and 2020, the Southern European market for mandarins, clementines, and citrus hybrids grew substantially, with volume increasing from 1,341 thousand tons to 1,868 thousand tons. In value terms, the market expanded from $1,427 million to $2,235 million, reflecting stronger pricing and a shift toward more valuable fruit varieties.

After peaking in 2020, market volume contracted over the next two years, falling to 1,721 thousand tons by 2022. This period coincided with adverse climatic conditions, including high humidity, which affected fruit quality and marketability. Concurrently, the sector saw increased planting of protected club varieties like Orri and Tango and benefited from the elimination of tariff and sanitary barriers for exports to the United States, which helped support export-oriented production.

In 2023, the market rebounded to 1,958 thousand tons, valued at $2,860 million—a 33% increase in value over the previous year. This recovery was driven by sustained European demand for easy-peeling and hybrid mandarins, the expansion of the export calendar through early and late varieties, and continued gains from preferential access to the US market. Varietal innovation and adaptation to international labeling standards further strengthened the sector's competitiveness.

In 2020, the region produced 3 121 K t of these fruits, marking a modest 8.8% increase from 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 4.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.6%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 2 730 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 8.4%.

The value of Southern Europe's mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 3 768 M $ US, reflecting a sharp 25.2% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value grew by 16.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.3%. The minimum value occurred in 2018 at 2 864 M $ US, which also experienced the largest drop of 11.2%.

Exports of mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids from Southern Europe have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, export volume reached 1 488 K t, down 3.0% from 2019. The peak was in 2018 at 1 568 K t, which also recorded the largest increase of 6.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom were the top destinations for exports in kind. Germany accounted for 25.0% of exports, France for 17.2%, and the United Kingdom for 8.9%, together making up 51.1% of total flows.

In 2020, the value of exported mandarins, clementines, tangelos, and citrus hybrids from Southern Europe stood at 1 797 M $ US, showing an 11.7% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 12.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.1%. The largest decline was in 2019 at 2.2%.
