Switzerland's maize starch production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 2,159 tonnes of maize starch, marking a 20.2% gain compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 27.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 8.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 1,611 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 5.1% that year.

Exports maize starch from Switzerland

Switzerland's maize starch exports have declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 92 tonnes, reflecting a 53.6% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 55.8%, with an average annual decline of 23.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, South Africa, France, and Germany remained the main buyers of Swiss maize starch in volume terms. South Africa accounted for 24.5% of exports, France for 20.8%, and Germany for 19.8%. Together, these three countries formed 65.2% of Switzerland's total maize starch exports by volume.

After a two-year decline, Switzerland's maize starch exports in value terms increased in 2020. The country exported $162,000 worth of maize starch, up 5.0% year-on-year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports in value terms decreased by 53.8%, equating to an average annual decline of 22.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at $154,000, which also saw the largest decline of 50.4% that year.

Between 2017 and 2020, France, Germany, and the Netherlands were the main buyers of Swiss maize starch in value terms. Switzerland's maize starch imports have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 4,489 tonnes, which is 26.6% lower than the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 29.2%, with an average annual decline of 10.9%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 6,629 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 4.5% that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, France, and Austria were the leading sources for Switzerland's maize starch imports in volume terms.
