Earlier Report Observations

The maize market in Thailand grew from approximately 5.0 million tonnes in 2018 to a peak of 6.6 million tonnes in 2021, driven by a substantial increase in imports which rose from 161 thousand tonnes to over 1.8 million tonnes over the same period. Domestic production, however, trended downward from 5.1 million tonnes to 4.8 million tonnes. After 2021, the total market volume contracted, reaching 5.9 million tonnes by 2023, as import levels receded.

Key developments in 2024 included favorable early-year weather that supported higher sweet corn yields. Authorities also announced new import requirements, set to take effect in 2026, mandating proof that imported feed maize was cultivated without burning to reduce PM2.5 pollution. Concurrently, trade negotiations with the United States were underway, focusing on potential reductions to import duties on feed maize for Thailand's animal feed industry.
