Earlier Report Observations

After adverse weather in 2017, policy reforms aimed at crop diversification and responding to international demand facilitated a surge in imports, helping the maize market volume reach 735 thousand tons in 2019 despite lower domestic production due to variable weather conditions. However, in 2020, continued weather volatility and water management challenges led to a market contraction to 552 thousand tons as both production and imports declined.

Floods in New South Wales and Queensland in 2021 limited production growth, but favorable conditions in Western Australia supported a recovery to 538 thousand tons, stabilizing market volume at 565 thousand tons. By 2022, exceptionally high global grain prices, driven by poor harvests in key producers and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, spurred domestic production to 638 thousand tons, lifting market volume to 608 thousand tons. In 2023, extreme heat waves and El Niño events, along with rising production costs, reduced output and imports, pulling market volume down to 521 thousand tons.
