Earlier Report Observations

The maize market in MERCOSUR started at 85.8 million tons in 2018, a year when droughts in key producing nations like the U.S., Brazil, and Argentina reduced global supply. Market volume stabilized at 84.5 million tons in 2019 before climbing to 97.2 million tons in 2020 as regional output expanded.

In 2021, a potential global deficit pushed corn prices up sharply, which encouraged higher imports and lower exports, supporting domestic market volume at 99.1 million tons. During 2022, international prices peaked amid climatic and geopolitical disruptions, trade contracted, and the market retreated to 94.1 million tons. By 2023, the introduction of advanced cultivation techniques and microbial products helped raise yields, allowing the market to recover to 97.3 million tons despite strong export activity.
