Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, liquid egg production in Zimbabwe experienced a gradual decline from 588 t to 516 t. During this period, the poultry sector saw increasing interest from agribusinesses and entrepreneurs, yet domestic output remained insufficient to meet local demand, leading to reliance on imports. The launch of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme (ZAGP) in 2019, backed by EU funding, provided additional support for agricultural development, including poultry and egg production.
A sharp turnaround occurred in 2022, when production jumped by 44% to 743 t, reaching 758 t in 2023. This growth was underpinned by sustained demand for eggs and the adoption of improved technologies such as solar-powered and dual-power incubators, which enhanced hatchery efficiency and reliability amid power supply challenges. The activity of local incubator manufacturers like Zim Incubators also supported the expansion of production capacity.
