Earlier Report Observations

Production of fresh leguminous vegetables in Malta began at 2 330 tonnes in 2018 but declined to 2 120 tonnes in 2019. The most severe drop occurred in 2020 when output fell to 1 160 tonnes and market volume reached 1 233 tonnes. This sharp contraction coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to widespread hygiene and safety measures in fresh produce markets, altering consumer behavior and disrupting normal vendor operations.

A partial recovery followed in 2021 and 2022, with production rising to 1 460 tonnes and market volume to 1 526 tonnes. This rebound was supported by heightened consumer awareness of pesticide residues and distrust in food safety controls, driving demand for more transparent and safer produce. In 2023, output fell again to 930 tonnes and market volume to 1 029 tonnes, a period when the government launched the Malta Action Plan for Organic Food 2023-2030, indicating a policy shift toward long-term support for organic agriculture.
