Earlier Report Observations

The Serbian market for lard and poultry fats grew substantially from 5 056 tons in 2018 to 9 653 tons in 2021. This expansion was supported by dietary interventions in piglet feed, such as the use of maize and full-fat soybean mixtures, which improved growth and meat quality, thereby increasing fat production. Research into fatty acid profiles and genetics also highlighted how enhanced nutrition could boost fat content in livestock.

After peaking in 2021, the market volume dipped to 8 893 tons in 2022. This decline coincided with a long-term decrease in poultry population and consumption, influenced by shifting consumer preferences and industry challenges. Additionally, rising feed ingredient prices for corn and soybeans directly raised production costs for poultry fat, putting pressure on the supply side.

In 2023, the market recovered to 9 682 tons despite ongoing issues in the agribusiness sector, such as insufficient technological advancement and state support, which continued to affect domestic production efficiency. Import volumes remained high, compensating for weaker local output.
