From 2018 to 2019, the market volume for lard and poultry fats in Morocco increased from 64 640 kg to 78 390 kg. This growth coincided with robust local poultry meat production of around 570 000 tonnes, including 100 000 tonnes of turkey meat, highlighting significant white meat output. The virtual absence of poultry meat and egg imports underscored strong domestic self-sufficiency, while a developed infrastructure of 36 feed mills supported the poultry sector, likely boosting fat yield as a by-product.

After 2019, the market volume began to decline, falling to 75 918 kg in 2020 and then sharply to 54 047 kg by 2021. By 2023, it had contracted to 29 696 kg. Although poultry meat production continued to grow in 2023, with broiler meat up 4% and turkey meat rising 13%, the sector faced fragmentation and repeated loss cycles exacerbated by the pandemic. A 23% drop in poultry meat exports and soaring input costs, including higher chick prices, likely reduced processing activity and fat output. Feed production for poultry increased by 10% in 2023, but this did not prevent the overall market contraction for fats.

In 2024, international factors such as supply disruptions in Brazil, a leading global poultry exporter, and rising world prices indirectly influenced the Moroccan market. Continued growth in poultry feed production supported the sector, while regulatory developments, including opinions issued by the Competition Council, pointed to potential shifts in market dynamics.
