Production of lard and poultry fats in Central Asia began the period at a high of 7 272 t in 2018. This level was supported by a significant expansion of livestock herds in Kazakhstan, where pig numbers grew by 60.8% and cattle by 11%, alongside the launch of new poultry farms aimed at increasing meat output.

From 2019, production entered a steady decline, falling to 3 258 t by 2023. The downturn was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions in 2020, which disrupted supply chains and dampened demand. While the meat sector itself saw growth through state subsidies and new production facilities, this did not translate into higher fat output, indicating possible shifts in processing efficiency or end-use demand.

In 2024, a series of regulatory changes were implemented, including new food safety regulations and subsidies for breeding livestock designed to boost productivity. These measures, combined with ongoing pressure from global prices and logistics costs, are reshaping the operating environment for animal fat producers.

Central Asia's production of lard and poultry fats has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 4,967 tonnes, which represents a 9.7% decrease compared to 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 39.3%, translating to an average annual decline of 15.3%.

Following a two-year downturn, Central Asia's imports of lard and poultry fats rebounded in 2020. The region imported 96.0 tonnes that year, marking a significant 20.6% increase compared to 2019. However, over the full 2017–2020 span, imports dropped by 67.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of -31.3%. The lowest point was in 2019, with 79.6 tonnes, and the sharpest decline of 64.3% also occurred that year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland and Russia were the dominant sources for Central Asia's imports in physical terms, jointly accounting for 91.6% of total flows, while other countries contributed smaller shares.

After two years of decline, Central Asia's imports of lard and poultry fats in value terms saw an uptick in 2020. The region imported approximately 59,100 US dollars worth of these products, reflecting an 18.8% year-over-year increase. Nonetheless, from 2017 to 2020, imports fell by 68%, equivalent to an annualized rate of -31.6%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 49,800 US dollars, with the largest decline of 62.3% also occurring that year.
