Earlier Report Observations

The Danish market for kaolin-coated paper and paperboard began the period under the influence of the EU's Green Public Procurement criteria for paper, which set sustainability requirements for public purchases. This regulatory focus started to shape institutional demand. Market volume nevertheless declined from 256 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 244 thousand tonnes in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 then triggered widespread supply chain disruptions, leading to a further contraction of the market to 209 thousand tonnes.

In 2021, increased consumer and corporate demand for recycled paper and certifications like FSC and CO2-neutral production supported a market recovery to 214 thousand tonnes. This shift toward more sustainable products provided a temporary uplift. However, 2022 saw a severe market correction, with volume plunging to 160 thousand tonnes, a drop that coincided with broader economic headwinds not fully captured by the ongoing sustainability trends.

Following the sharp decline, the market showed signs of partial stabilization, rising to 169 thousand tonnes in 2023. However, this was followed by another decrease to 157 thousand tonnes in 2024, reflecting continued volatility in the latter part of the review period.
