Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for kaolin and kaolinic clays in Oceania fell sharply in 2019 to 175.2 thousand tons from 253.3 thousand tons in 2018. Despite the introduction of Imerys S.A.'s EType™ hyper-platy kaolin product line for paper applications that year, the decline reflected broader industry challenges. The market rebounded in 2020 to 218.9 thousand tons, supported by acquisitions such as Sibelco's purchase of Ukrainian clay producers and EICL Limited's full acquisition of Kaolin India Private Limited, which expanded regional production capabilities.

Growth continued through 2021 and 2022, with the market reaching 229.8 thousand tons and then 243.6 thousand tons. This expansion was fueled by strong demand from the Asia-Pacific region, which accounts for half of global kaolin consumption, and by rising use of kaolin in fibreglass for automotive and aerospace sectors. Emerging applications in high-purity alumina for telecommunications and electronics also contributed. Meanwhile, global supply chain disruptions posed constraints, but increasing quality standards in ceramics and construction bolstered demand. Looking ahead, Sibelco announced a major greenfield expansion plan for clays production from 2024, and LB Minerals Ltd. revealed plans to boost output to 120 thousand tons of enriched kaolin in Western Australia.
