The market volume for in-shell hazelnuts in Hungary increased from 161 t in 2018 to 399 t in 2023, with notable growth spurts in 2019 and 2023. The initial rise in 2019 was supported by growing interest from both growers and traders, which encouraged higher import volumes. After a temporary dip in 2020, the market recovered strongly in 2021, partly due to reinforced consumer preference for local flavors, especially during the holiday season. The most significant expansion occurred in 2023, when the introduction of certified organic in-shell hazelnuts directly from producers met rising health-conscious demand.

Throughout the period, domestic production remained small-scale with low yields, constrained by strict plant protection regulations that limit the use of certain pesticides. However, harvesting and storage techniques improved, involving mechanical systems and drying at 40°C. The market continued to be shaped by niche early-season varieties and increasing consumer awareness, which also boosted demand for hazelnut-based products like flavored beverages. In the later years, the market structure persisted with small-scale farming and growing interest in organic offerings.

Hungary's in-shell hazelnut production grew for the third consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 210.0 tonnes, marking a 10.5% increase from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production rose by 50%, with an average annual growth rate of 14.5%.
