Earlier Report Observations

The honey market in Samoa expanded from 194 tons in 2018 to 199 tons in 2019, driven by the launch of small-scale beekeeping projects and supportive government reporting focused on agricultural development. This growth was interrupted in 2020 when market volume fell to 177 tons, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a measles outbreak, which disrupted production chains and local demand.

Market volume recovered to 195 tons in 2021 despite ongoing challenges from American Foulbrood disease in hives, while legislative reforms aligned with WTO accession provided a framework for trade. From 2022 to 2023, production and market volume gradually declined to 190 tons and 186 tons respectively, even as training programs for organic beekeeping and continued ministry efforts to improve market access were implemented.

Regulatory updates on business licensing and biosecurity, along with the formation of the Samoa Apiculture Organisation in 2024, aimed to strengthen the local industry through better access to grants and enhanced sustainability initiatives.
