It grew from 76.7 million US dollars in 2018 to 89.2 million in 2019, then remained nearly stable at 88.7 million in 2020. A sharp contraction followed, with the market shrinking to 53.9 million in 2021 and further to 40.9 million in 2022.

A clear recovery began in 2023 as the market value increased to 49.5 million US dollars. This rebound accelerated in 2024, with the market surging by 53% to reach 75.7 million. The strong growth in 2024 was supported by the broader digitalization of retail, including new regulations for electronic signatures that facilitated online transactions, and a continued consumer shift towards e-commerce.

Romania's handbag production declined for the second year in a row. In 2019, output was valued at 109.8 million US dollars, marking a significant 23.0% drop from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 19.6%, which translates to an average annual decrease of 7.0%. The peak was reached in 2018, with production valued at 145.7 million US dollars, and that year also saw the largest increase of 6.7%.

Romania's handbag exports decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports totaled 975 tonnes, representing a sharp 35.7% decline year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 44.3%, averaging an annual decrease of 17.7%. The highest volume was recorded in 2018 at 1,790 tonnes, with the largest increase of 2.3% also occurring that year.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy, France, and Germany were the main destinations for Romania's handbag exports by volume. Italy accounted for 48.0% of exports, France for 15.9%, and Germany for 15.7%, together making up 79.6% of the total.

Handbag shipments from Romania abroad fell for the second year in a row. In 2019, exports amounted to 72.6 million US dollars, which is 35.7% lower than the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 35.2%, with an average annual decline of 13.5%. The peak value was in 2018 at 121.5 million US dollars, and the largest increase of 8.4% was also recorded that year.

After increasing for two years, handbag imports into Romania declined. In 2019, imports totaled 1,761 tonnes, reflecting a 26.4% drop from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 9.1%, averaging a 3.1% annual decline. The highest volume was in 2019 at 2,394 tonnes, while the largest increase of 17.0% occurred in 2018.
