Earlier Report Observations

The Senegalese groundnut oil-cake market expanded from 211.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 220.8 thousand tons in 2019. This growth was driven by a 95.1% increase in groundnut collections, which boosted crude oil production by 54.7% and directly lifted oil-cake output by 59.9%, supported by the dominant state-owned processor Sonacos and protective import tariffs.

Market volume contracted sharply to 169.7 thousand tons in 2020. A recovery to 184.9 thousand tons followed in 2021, supported by the ongoing economic emphasis on local groundnut processing and policy recommendations to limit oil imports in favor of domestic production.

Volume grew further to 197.2 thousand tons in 2022 but fell to 170.2 thousand tons in 2023. The 2023 decline was linked to a national groundnut harvest of only around 800 000 tons, far below the targeted 1.7 million tons, which constrained raw material supply despite a 20% larger government budget for the agricultural campaign.
