Earlier Report Observations

The market for grape wine spirits in Lithuania expanded from 3 555 тыс. л in 2018 to 4 854 тыс. л in 2019. This growth was driven by a surge in imports, as consumers increasingly brought alcohol from abroad following amendments to the Alcohol Control Law. Simultaneously, a sharp excise tax hike of over 100% on wine and beer in a single year made spirits relatively more affordable, supporting demand despite an overall ban on alcohol advertising introduced in 2018.

From 2020 onward, the market volume contracted sharply, falling to 2 275 тыс. л in 2020 and to 1 361 тыс. л by 2022. This decline coincided with a reported drop of more than 38% in demand for strong spirits over the decade and a reduction in the shadow market for illegal alcohol. Further pressure came from rising consumer prices, which increased by 11.4% in 2021, coupled with a decrease in purchasing power that led to lower sales in retail and hospitality venues.

The downward trend continued, with market volume reaching 783 тыс. л in 2024. During this period, consumer preferences increasingly shifted toward wine, diverting demand away from spirits. The market remained dominated by low-price segments like cheap vodka, while higher-priced spirits held a minor share. In value terms, these dynamics led to fluctuations, with the market peaking at $22.8 million in 2021 before falling to $14.6 million in 2024.
