The Norwegian market for granite blocks and slabs showed significant volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2022. After starting at 27 200 t in 2018, the market contracted to 24 681 t in 2019, then expanded sharply to 30 923 t in 2020. By 2022, however, market volume had fallen markedly to 16 247 t, a decrease of 47% from the 2020 high. In value terms, the market followed a similar trajectory, reaching 10.2 million USD in 2020 before declining to 7.4 million USD in 2022.

Domestic production also varied, dropping from 15 576 t in 2018 to 9 430 t in 2019, then recovering to 18 674 t in 2020 and settling at 17 949 t in 2022. The parallel movements in volume and value indicate that changes were driven primarily by physical market dynamics rather than price shifts alone during these years.

From 2023 onward, the market environment was affected by a notable increase in material costs for building materials in Norway, which elevated input expenses for granite products. Concurrently, growing emphasis on sustainability and digitalization in the construction sector began shaping consumer preferences and market strategies for natural stone.

Over the entire period from 2018 to 2020, production grew by 22.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.0%.

The market exhibited considerable volatility during these years. In 2019, production volume hit its lowest point at 9,430 tonnes, reflecting a substantial decline of 39.5%. The following year, in 2020, Norway produced 18,674 tonnes of granite blocks and slabs, nearly doubling with a 98.0% increase compared to 2019. This created a two-fold gap between the highest production in 2020 and the lowest in 2019.

Exports reached their lowest point in 2020 at 442 tonnes, after which they rebounded strongly in 2021 to 833 tonnes, representing a dramatic gain of 88.5% compared to the previous year. The peak occurred in 2018, creating a 3.6-fold difference between the high of 2018 and the low of 2020. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 61.9%.

From 2018 to 2021, Sweden, France, and Syria were the main buyers of granite blocks and slabs from Norway, together accounting for 52.0% of total exports in kind. Sweden led with 27.5% of exports, followed by France at 12.3% and Syria at 12.1%.
