From 2018 to 2019, garlic production in Tajikistan increased to 16.5 thousand tons, supported by the ongoing agriculturalization of the economy and a recovery in agricultural exports. However, in 2020, output fell sharply to 12.7 thousand tons as the COVID-19 pandemic reduced foodservice demand in the region, disrupting trade and consumption patterns.

Production rebounded to 14.9 thousand tons in 2021 following continued government measures to support farmers and develop agriculture. Output then stabilized at around 14.1–14.7 thousand tons in 2022 and 2023 amid export restrictions on agricultural products and geopolitical risks that affected currency fluctuations and trade flows.

The market showed significant volatility during this period. Production reached its lowest point in 2017, then peaked in 2019 with a 2.8-fold increase between these years. In 2020, Tajikistan produced 12 666 tons of garlic, representing a substantial 23.0% decrease compared to the previous year. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 16 459 tons. The most significant growth occurred in 2018 with a 165.3% increase.

Export trends were unstable throughout the analyzed timeframe. Exports hit their lowest point in 2017, then reached their highest level in 2018 with a 1.8-fold difference between these years. In 2019, Tajikistan exported 113.9 tons of garlic, marking a sharp 28.0% decline compared to the previous year. The maximum export volume was recorded in 2018 at 158.3 tons. The largest increase occurred in 2018 with an 81.0% rise.

Between 2017 and 2020, Kyrgyzstan accounted for 74.5% of total garlic exports in volume terms, while the remaining exports were distributed among numerous other countries, each with smaller individual shares.

Garlic export revenues from Tajikistan declined for the second consecutive year. In 2019, exports amounted to 18.9 thousand US dollars, representing a 41.8% decrease compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2019, export revenues fell by 49.6%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 20.4%.
