Romania’s furskin apparel market shrank from $8.7 million in 2018 to $3.9 million in 2020, as the COVID‑19 pandemic disrupted retail, reduced consumer mobility, and caused a steep decline in luxury fashion spending.

After 2020, the market remained subdued at $3.4 million in 2024. Growing consumer interest in sustainable and ethical fashion reduced demand for natural fur, while the closure of Romanian fur farms under European rules limited domestic supply. The entry of more than 40 international retailers between 2020 and 2025 intensified competition, and online fashion sales grew, but these developments did not offset the overall contraction.
