Earlier Report Observations

The market for flour or powder of sago, roots or tubers in Trinidad and Tobago contracted sharply between 2018 and 2022. Domestic production fell from 75 000 kg to 20 550 kg over this period, driving the total market volume down from 71 072 kg to 24 943 kg. The most severe drop occurred from 2018 to 2019, when production more than halved.

In 2022, the government expanded grant funding to encourage new producers making flour from local root crops like sweet potato and cassava, a policy supported by the National Marketing Development Corporation (Namdevco) to boost alternatives to wheat flour amid global food supply disruptions. Despite this initiative, domestic production continued to decline in 2022 and 2023. Market volume, however, rebounded to 31 480 kg in 2023, largely due to a surge in imports which offset the lower local output.
