Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, production of flour, meal and powder of fruits and nuts in Cameroon decreased from 502 t to 455 t, while the market size fluctuated between 490 t and 457 t. During the initial years, the broader flour market was shaped by Cameroon's strong and growing dependence on wheat imports, which influenced overall sector dynamics.

Rising global wheat prices in 2021, driven by export quotas and taxes, increased import costs and led to temporary suspensions of wheat flour deliveries. This prompted concerted efforts between millers' associations and the government in 2022 to maintain supply stability and control consumer prices for flour-based products.

By 2023, a reduction in global wheat prices allowed for a decrease in the price of wheat flour. Concurrently, initiatives to integrate local flours into consumption gained traction, with products based on plantain and other local ingredients emerging. In 2024, these efforts were reinforced by the validation of five quality standards for local flours and significant investment in new processing capacity, aimed at import substitution and supporting the market for flours derived from local fruits and other crops.
