Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the duck meat market volume in Western Europe remained stable, with a slight increase to 274 thousand tonnes in 2019. This was supported by traditional duck farming methods in Southwestern France, using whole-grain corn feeding to ensure product quality, as well as the growth of online sales and chilled vacuum-packed delivery, which expanded consumer access to fresh products.

Starting in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and reduced consumption, leading to a drop in market volume to 234.7 thousand tonnes. Then, the outbreak of avian flu in 2021 and its continuation in 2022 caused a significant reduction in duck meat production as the disease affected duck flocks. This, along with high costs and shifting consumer preferences, drove the market volume down sharply to 158 thousand tonnes in 2022.

In 2023, the market volume showed recovery, rising to 184.5 thousand tonnes, with production increasing to 159.8 thousand tonnes, indicating a gradual overcoming of the avian flu impacts.
