The market volume of dried shelled peas in Czechia increased from 39.4 thousand tonnes in 2019 to a peak of 64.2 thousand tonnes in 2021, before declining to 52.7 thousand tonnes in 2023. The growth in 2020-2021 was supported by changing consumer habits during the COVID-19 pandemic, which boosted demand for long-shelf-life products, as well as a growing interest in plant-based proteins and healthy eating. In 2021, amendments to the Food and Tobacco Products Act came into force, potentially improving market standards and confidence.

From 2022 onwards, high inflation and rising energy costs increased production expenses and consumer prices, leading to a drop in volume in 2022. In 2023, ongoing global factors including the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis further constrained growth, despite sustained consumer interest in healthy food options.

Following a two-year decline, Czechia's production of dried shelled peas rebounded in 2020. That year, the country produced 84 860 tonnes, marking a significant increase of 26.0% compared to 2019. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 2.8%, which translates to an average annual decline of 0.9%. The lowest production volume was recorded in 2019 at 67 340 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year drop occurred in 2018 with a decrease of 19.2%.

After two years of decline, the value of Czechia's dried shelled peas production rose in 2020. Output was valued at 31 049 thousand US dollars that year, up 23.0% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production value fell by 3.9%, equivalent to a compound annual growth rate of -1.3%. The minimum value was 25 248 thousand US dollars in 2019, and the steepest decline took place in 2018 with a 15.5% drop.

Czechia's exports of dried shelled peas grew for the second year in a row in 2020. The country shipped 31 574 tonnes abroad, reflecting a moderate increase of 7.5% compared to 2019. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 26 180 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 15.6%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the biggest rise with a 12.2% increase.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Poland, and Austria were the primary destinations for Czechia's dried shelled peas exports by volume. Germany accounted for 60.4% of exports, Poland for 9.8%, and Austria for 4.0%. Together, these three markets represented 74.2% of total export flows.

The value of Czechia's dried shelled peas exports continued to grow in 2020, marking the second consecutive year of increase. Exports reached 11 552 thousand US dollars, up 4.9% from the previous year. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 10 129 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 11.8%. The most substantial increase occurred in 2019 with an 8.8% rise.
