The volume of the dried shelled beans market in Indonesia fluctuated significantly between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 304.7 thousand tons in 2018, it dropped to 242.8 thousand tons in 2019 due to lower domestic production and imports. A recovery followed in 2020 to 277.2 thousand tons, and the market peaked at 309.9 thousand tons in 2021, supported by increased imports under the country's bean and soybean import policies. However, extreme weather conditions and the implementation of new distribution regulations under Minister of Trade Regulation No. 18/2022 contributed to a sharp contraction to 204.5 thousand tons in 2022. The market rebounded to 264.6 thousand tons in 2023 as improved varieties and better cultivation technology, supported by agricultural research agencies, boosted production.

Structural and regulatory shifts continued to shape the market. The growing consumer trend toward healthy, plant-based eating sustained demand for beans as a protein source. Regulatory updates, including the National Food Agency's labeling rules for fresh food (No. 1/2023) and later changes for processed food labeling (No. 6/2024), along with halal certification requirements, affected product packaging and marketing. Further adjustments to import rules and tariffs under Minister of Trade Regulation No. 31/2025, coupled with government-backed investments in agricultural technology, were introduced to influence market access and production capacity.

Indonesia's dried shelled beans production increased for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 223.2 K t, showing little change from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, production fell by 5%, with an average annual decline of 1.7%. The lowest output was in 2019 at 196.0 K t, which marked the largest drop of 16.6%. The biggest gain occurred in 2020, with a 13.3% increase.

Indonesia's dried shelled beans production value rose for the second consecutive year. In 2021, output was valued at 292.1 M $ US, a strong 23.8% jump from the previous year. From 2018 to 2021, production value grew by 33.5%, averaging 10.1% per year. The lowest value was in 2019 at 199.1 M $ US, which saw the largest decline of 9.0%.

After two years of growth, Indonesia's dried shelled beans export volumes fell. In 2021, exports totaled 31.8 K t, down 34.6% from the prior year. The peak was in 2020 at 48.7 K t, which also recorded the largest increase of 36.7%.

From 2018 to 2021, China, the Philippines, and Asia, not elsewhere specified, were the main partners for Indonesia's dried shelled beans exports by volume. China accounted for 44.8% of exports, the Philippines for 31.3%, and Asia, not elsewhere specified for 18.0%, together making up 94.2% of total flows.

Following two years of increases, Indonesia's dried shelled beans exports declined. In 2021, exports were valued at 41.7 M $ US, a solid 19.4% drop from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports rose by 38.1%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 11.4%. The highest value was in 2020 at 51.7 M $ US, which also saw the largest increase of 43.0%.

The biggest rise occurred in 2020, with a 26.1% increase.
