From 2018 to 2022, the diamond market size in the Democratic Republic of the Congo declined from 11.8 million carats to 6.6 million carats. The sharpest drop occurred in 2021, when market volume fell by one-third to 6.3 million carats. A modest recovery followed in 2022, with market size increasing to 6.6 million carats.

Beginning in 2022, weakening global diamond demand and price volatility reduced export volumes, leaving more diamonds available domestically. Industrial producers faced significant challenges, with exports dropping 28% in 2023 to a five-year low after the country lost its position as Africa's second-largest producer to Angola. The sector became increasingly concentrated, as SACIM dominated industrial output after MIBA halted production in March 2024. Artisanal mining remained the core of the industry, consistently accounting for over 60% of exports. By 2024, production and exports rebounded strongly, with third-quarter export volume reaching a record 7 million carats due to renewed output and concentrated demand from the UAE and Belgium, despite continued pressure from a 25% price decline since 2022.
