By 2022, selective laser melting (SLM) technology became an industrial standard for non-precious metal restorations, significantly enhancing production efficiency and contributing to a surge in domestic output, which reached 1.9 million USD that year.

After 2022, domestic production accelerated sharply, rising to 7.4 million USD in 2024. This growth coincided with a decline in imports from their 2022 peak of 19.1 million USD and a substantial increase in exports, which grew from 5.7 million USD in 2022 to 9.9 million USD in 2025. The overall market size decreased to 12.1 million USD in 2023 but stabilized around 12.2 million USD in 2024, indicating a shift toward greater self-sufficiency in Hungary's dental instrument sector.

After two consecutive years of decline, Hungary's exports of dental instruments and appliances showed growth in 2021. The country exported 55.7 tons that year, marking a 2.8% increase compared to 2020. Looking at the broader period from 2018 to 2021, exports decreased by 19.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 7.0%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2020 at 54.1 tons, while the sharpest year-on-year drop occurred in 2019 with a 19.2% decrease.

Between 2018 and 2021, Germany accounted for 86.5% of Hungary's total exports of dental instruments and appliances by volume. The remaining exports were distributed among various smaller trading partners.

The country exported dental instruments and appliances worth 6 258 thousand US dollars that year, representing a significant 54.1% increase compared to 2020. Over the four-year period from 2018 to 2021, export value rose by 23.5%, averaging an annual growth rate of 7.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 3 692 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 27.1% that year.

From 2018 to 2021, Germany remained Hungary's primary export market in value terms, capturing 76.8% of total exports. The rest of the export value was spread across numerous other destinations.

Following a two-year downward trend, Hungary's imports of dental instruments and appliances by volume rebounded in 2021. The import volume reached 142.9 tons that year, up 9.5% from 2020. However, over the period from 2018 to 2021, imports decreased by 3.3%, averaging an annual decline of 1.1%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 130.5 tons, which also experienced the steepest drop of 9.9% that year.

Throughout 2018–2021, Germany, Italy, and China were the main sources of Hungary's imports of dental instruments and appliances by volume. Germany accounted for 31.0% of imports, Italy for 23.4%, and China for 13.8%. Together, these three countries represented 68.2% of total import flows.
