This downturn aligned with the Central Bank of Nigeria's announced policy to achieve self-sufficiency in palm oil, which likely redirected agricultural focus and resources towards palm oil cultivation, affecting the supply of other vegetable oils like cottonseed oil.

The market rebounded sharply in 2021, with cottonseed oil production surging by 69% to 16 900 t. This significant increase in domestic output drove the total market volume up to 17 900 t, even as imports remained low. The expansion restored the market to levels near its 2018 size.

From 2022 to 2023, production stabilized around 17 200 t while the market volume continued a moderate climb to 19 601 t. This period coincided with global disruptions to vegetable oil supply chains and rising international prices, factors that bolstered domestic market conditions and supported local consumption and production stability.
