From 2018 to 2020, cotton seed production in Cameroon increased from 295.1 thousand tons to 336.3 thousand tons, while the domestic market size grew from 290.1 thousand tons to 306.8 thousand tons. This growth was underpinned by the dominant state-owned company SODECOTON, which held a monopoly on production guidance, processing, and export, coupled with a government sectoral policy adopted in 2015 aimed at enhancing agricultural potential and reducing rural poverty. The initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 affected SODECOTON's operational performance but did not reverse the upward trend.

Production dropped sharply to 240.0 thousand tons in 2021, with a simultaneous surge in exports reducing the domestic market to 195.7 thousand tons. A gradual recovery followed, reaching 280.0 thousand tons of production and a market size of 266.2 thousand tons by 2023. In 2022, fertilizer shortages linked to the war in Ukraine disrupted the supply of agricultural inputs, increasing local prices and potentially affecting seed quality, which moderated the pace of recovery. During this period, SODECOTON maintained its market dominance and announced ambitious plans to boost production capacity and local processing, supporting longer-term market development.
