From 2018 to 2022, the Slovak market for copper bars, rods and profiles grew significantly, with volume rising from 1 643 t to an estimated peak. This expansion was primarily driven by legislative changes in the construction sector, which increased demand for building materials including copper profiles. The approval of new construction legislation in 2022, introducing reserved activities and abolishing the Slovak Construction Inspection from April 2024, provided a further boost to imports and market volume. Global factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the war in Ukraine in 2022 also influenced supply chains and demand patterns during this period.

The market entered a contraction phase starting in 2023, with volume falling to 3 198 t and then to 2 483 t in 2024. The implementation of the 2023 construction law amendments, coupled with stricter environmental requirements for materials, dampened activity in the key construction sector. In 2024, the postponement of the new construction law's effectiveness to April 2025—aimed at addressing deficiencies—led to deferred projects and reduced demand for copper profiles. Simultaneously, inflation and rising material prices increased production costs and final prices, further restraining consumption.

Exports copper bars, rods and profiles from Slovakia

Exports in kind, t

Slovakia's exports of copper bars, rods, and profiles declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 1 140 tons, representing a moderate 8.8% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 35.6%, which translates to an average annual decline of 13.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Czechia remained the top buyer of copper bars, rods, and profiles from Slovakia, accounting for 78.9% of total exports in volume. The remaining exports were distributed among various other countries.

Slovakia's export value of copper bars, rods, and profiles dropped for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 7 006 thousand US dollars, down 10.6% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 17.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -6.2%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 8 573 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 0.9%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Czechia was the primary buyer of copper bars, rods, and profiles from Slovakia in value terms, taking 76.0% of total exports. The rest was shared by a diverse group of other countries.

Slovakia's imports of copper bars, rods, and profiles rose for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 3 508 tons, showing a 6.1% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 25.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 7.8%.

In the 2017-2020 period, France, Poland, and Germany were the main sources for Slovakia's imports of copper bars, rods, and profiles in volume. France contributed 23.7%, Poland 20.0%, and Germany 11.6%, together making up 55.3% of total imports.

After two years of growth, Slovakia's import value of copper bars, rods, and profiles declined. In 2020, imports stood at 24 860 thousand US dollars, a 1.9% decrease from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 25.7%, averaging 7.9% per year. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 25 340 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 19.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland, France, and Germany were the leading contributors to Slovakia's import value of copper bars, rods, and profiles. Poland accounted for 23.3%, France for 21.3%, and Germany for 16.0%, collectively representing 60.5% of total imports.
