Earlier Report Observations

The coniferous wood fuel market in Kenya held steady at 2.64 million m³ in 2018 and 2019. This stability coincided with the launch of the National Energy Policy (2018), which set guidelines for sustainable biomass use to reduce pressure on forest resources, and the Energy Act of 2019 that aimed to improve rural energy security through value addition in agricultural products. However, underlying factors like high deforestation rates and agricultural expansion continued to strain wood fuel supply.

Market volume fell to 2.495 million m³ in 2020 and remained at this level through 2023. The decline occurred amid persistent demand for wood fuel, which drives deforestation and limits forest resource availability. Simultaneously, rising energy costs prompted an industrial shift toward firewood and briquettes in zones like Thika and Nakuru, increasing pressure on supply. In response, forest conservation policies and permit systems enforced by the Kenya Forest Service, alongside changing consumer preferences toward more economical fuels, helped regulate access and stabilized the market at the lower volume.
