Earlier Report Observations
The Mexican market for cocoa shells, husks, and waste saw considerable shifts from 2018 to 2023. The enactment of the General Law for the Prevention and Comprehensive Management of Waste (LGPGIR) established a regulatory framework for waste handling, contributing to a market volume increase to 14 936 t in 2019. This growth coincided with broader recognition that around 80% of the cocoa fruit is discarded as residual biomass. However, volume plunged to 5 516 t in 2020, a year that also marked the beginning of research into repurposing this waste for bioplastics and other sustainable products.
Market recovery began in 2021, with volume rising to 8 728 t, aided by scientometric studies that underscored trends in valorizing cocoa by-products for the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Expansion continued in 2022, reaching 10 600 t, supported by progress in waste management regulations and an increase in recycling infrastructure, including the registration of 874 solid waste processing facilities across several states.
In 2023, market volume declined to 9 600 t. During this period, technological advances such as developing bioplastics and biodegradable packaging from cocoa shells gained momentum, offering new outlets for waste. Furthermore, the global and regional cocoa market crisis—driven by adverse climate, geopolitical tensions, and logistical issues—began to influence the sector, affecting the underlying production of cocoa waste.
